Recipe of Pastelón

My family loves this recipe of Pastelón dish , so much that in the past 2 weeks I cooked this twice. I hope you enjoy this recipe.



  • 6 big potatoes, peeled and cut in 4 to 6 pieces (cook faster in small pieces)

  • 3 1/2 cups of water

  • 2 lb. Turkey Ground meat

  • 12 oz Shredded Mix Cheese (choose the cheese you like, I use Mozzarella, Cheddar and Colby Jack.

  • 8 oz original cream cheese

  • 1/4 cup of milk

  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 1 tbsp salt

  • 1/4 cup Sofrito

  • 1/4 tsp pepper

  • 1/4 tsp paprika

  • 1/4 cup tomato puree

  • 1 pack of sazon with Achiote

  • 1/4 tsp oregano

  • 1/4 tsp chicken bouillon

  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt

  • 1tbsp olive oil


  • Put the potatoes on a 6 qt pot with 3 cups water, 1/2 tbsp salt in medium heat for at least 20 minutes until potatoes are soft and you can put a fork through.

  • In a medium pan add the olive oil and sofrito, do a little sauté and add the ground meat.

  • add the water, salt, pepper, paprika, sazon, oregano, chicken bouillon, garlic salt and mix all together and let it sit on medium heat until meat is cooked and water has dry.

  • add the tomato puree and let it sit for at least 5 minutes on medium heat.

  • Drained potatoes and in the same pot add butter, cream cheese and milk, now mashed everything all together until potato is soft and there is no big chunks. I recommend that you try the potato in case you need to add a little bit more salt if needed.

  • Grab a 2 qt deep square pan, spray cooking oil and start adding a layer of the potato evenly.

  • add ground meat same way as potato

  • add cheese, you can add as much as you like

  • if you have more meat add more to it or just start adding the last layer of potato. Evenly and covering all the cheese.

  • now add more cheese and cover with aluminum paper but I always recommend to spray the sheet with cooking out so it doesn't stick to the cheese.

  • Pre-heat oven to 400F degrees once oven is on the temperature add the Pastelon and cook for 25 minutes.

  • Uncover the pastelon and now broil for 5 minutes to give a little toast to the cheese on top. Buttttt... you need to stay close because broil can burn the food really fast.
